Keeping the faith

"Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark" ~ Rabindranath Tagore

I am going to make a bold statement: I have unfaltering faith in the universe.

The absolute and essential component of a happy peaceful life is faith. Faith that it exists. Faith that you can influence if not control your destiny. Faith that no matter what, everything will be OK. My mother always told me “This too shall pass. It will be alright in the end. And, if it isn’t alright, it isn’t the end”.

Easy for me to sit and preach, I know. Believe me, I’ve been there in the despair of pain and suffering thinking how nothing will ever be OK again. But it was. Do I believe that I will never experience pain or suffering again? Hell no. Its all part of being human. I will suffer loss again, I will have to grieve again, I will have to heal again. BUT- the unfaltering faith I have in the universe will carry me through. Faith isn’t about delusion. Indeed, the Buddhist path leads you directly away from delusion. Delusion is recipe for attachment and expectation, which is recipe for suffering. Pain escapes no one in this life. We do not choose our pain (well… not consciously. I believe we have soul contracts but that’s for another blog). We choose our suffering. Will we let the pain mold us into bitterness, resentment and ultimately illness? Or will we choose to take that pain and grow? The latter is most certainly the harder option. But as with all toil, the harder you work, the greater the reward.

I will take this opportunity to say that what you believe in is completely irrelevant. Faith is not about being prescribed a religion or a way of life. If you believe in Christianity, truly believe in a God that is good and has your back, that is faith. If you believe a Divine force exists amongst the forests and the seas that gives energy to your existence, that is faith. It does not matter what it is you believe in, as long as you believe. Truly believe. Because what we truly believe, we create emotion around. E-motion- energy in motion. Rick Strassman, a psychiatrist and author researched DMT (Di-methyltriptamine) the spirit molecule. A psychedelic used by many to elevate their consciousness for esoteric experiences (the active compound in Ayahuasca). A recurring theme with many of the subjects was some kind of interaction or demonstration of divine “power” or existence. Even devoutly religious participants had experiences where they saw visuals of not just their own deities, prophets or Gods, but all of them. Allah, Jesus, Buddha, all together showing them that it is not important who you choose to believe in, it all comes back to one energy (1). One love. One liberation.

It is what the faith creates in and of us that holds the importance. Joe Dispenza, neuroscientist and author of “You are the Placebo”, demonstrates through his work how this is so. One thought changes the whole biochemistry of your body. One good thought commences a cascade of oxytocin, endorphins, cancer fighting cells, improving your health immediately. One negative thought releases cortisol, adrenaline, suppressing the immune system. We literally kill ourselves with our thoughts (2).

The concept of a placebo is well accepted. To the point, very few scientific experiments are without a placebo as a control group. A placebo is given in disguise of a real treatment such as a drug when it is in fact benign with no active ingredients. For example, advising someone they are being given pain relief when they are, in fact, being administered salt water. The placebo is effective in curing patients in 15-75% of instances (3). The science world accepts this proof. Yet for some reason, the concept of being able to heal yourself through focused thoughts is “woo woo”. Spiritual healing has existed since the beginning of time, yet over time, this has been mocked and rejected. Pioneers such as Joe Dispenza are changing this attitude through scientific research with the proof that having faith in your own body and mind to heal itself is effective.

With this in mind, if you believe that your God, your Divine, your Universe has your back, you will always have strength in the dark moments. One of the most beautiful quotes that I say to myself every single day comes from the late Dr. Wayne Dyer: “If you knew who walked beside you, on this path that you have chosen, you would never experience fear or doubt again”.

Faith is the seed that grows the love and trust you need to completely surrender. In that release of resistance is where your faith will be validated.
